## What happened

The European Commission announced a targeted consultation on copyright on 29 September 2026. It is answered on the EU Survey platform and remains open until 3 November 2026.

Three of its sections deal with generative AI: copyright and generative AI, licensing and enforcement of rights, and AI-generated imitations of performers. Other sections cover piracy of live events, remuneration for music recordings and copyright in research.

## Why it matters

The Commission invites rights holders, collective management organisations and generative AI providers, among others, so a filmmaker who holds rights in a film can answer. The Commission says it is collecting views on whether the copyright framework should be reinforced and on options for future measures.

## Still open

As of 19 October, the consultation page gives no closing time and no timetable for a proposal. It refers only to potential future measures.

## For your film

Before 3 November, read the three generative AI sections and decide whether to answer in your own name or through your guild or collecting society.
